Every day math suggestions

Submitted: August 17, 2003

Have you tried "every day" math concepts? I have a child who is very cerebral (girl) and LOVES math -- use to come downstairs dolled up in her best dress-up clothes and sit down to write addition/subtraction problems in her sketch pad when she was 4. I also have a boy who is very active, can't sit still for more than three minutes for anything and I think is seriously
intimidated by his sister's and father's (the physics teacher) math mindedness.

Instead of pushing a math curriculum on him (and we have the Singapore books -- which he will do every once in a while to "show" him how much he has learned on his own), I incorporate math lessons into our games, our "work" around the house, and almost everywhere we go. We talk about measuring and proportion when we cook. We weigh everything at the grocery store scales (really, everything -- then we read the labels on things that don't fit on the produce scales to see how they compare to things they weigh -- more than/greater, less than/fewer). He borrowed a Pokemon board game from a friend that requires addition and comparing on every turn. I use ideas from Peggy Kaye's book Games for Math constantly. We play dominos, count money (Monopoly Jr.), use our $2.99 100-foot tape measure (from Big Lots) on nature walks to measure trees, distances, etc. He loves to make graphs in unusual ways of unusual things and enjoys counting money . . . enough already!!

Math is a language that is all around us. Learning about math doesn't require a text and doing problems. I have tutored a couple of "creative" kids in math concepts and I have found the most success playing games where math concepts/applications are incorporated. So, you're on the right
track!!
