Fun early phonics activity on a Scrabble boardSubmitted: April 27, 2003 A Scrabble board can be a fun way to teach reading and letter sounds. One game that I played with my son when he was learning the letter sounds was to take turn making "words" on the Scrabble board. When it was my turn, I would make a real word and show him how to sound it out. When it was his turn, he would put a group of letters on the board that usually didn't make a real word. But no matter how silly the "word" was, I would do my best to sound it out. I got lots of practice sounding out words like "grztev" and "ptliks". My son thought it was hilarious and had great fun, and it helped him to understand that the letters make sounds and those sounds go together to make words. Don't try to connect the words together Scrabble-style at this age - it will just confuse them.
