My experiences with Hooked on Phonics

Submitted: May 08, 2006

I used Hooked on Phonics to teach my son to read and I found it to be an excellent program. It's easy to use, but best of all it comes with fun and interesting books for your child to read.

Before using Hooked on Phonics, I had looked for good beginning reader books. But all the ones that I found either were too hard for a beginning reader, or were, frankly, boring. The books that come with Hooked on Phonics are interesting, even the very first ones which use the simplist sounds and words.

The program itself works best if you tailor it to your child's learning style and preferences. For example, my son didn't like the tapes, so we abandoned the tapes early on. We also skipped a lot of the review pages, since my son is a gifted child who, like many gifted children, is quickly turned off by too much repetition. You know best what works and doesn't work for your child. It's also best if you keep the lessons short and quit while your child is still having fun. Leave them wanting more!

Hooked on Phonics worked for us and my son loved it. While it is not necessary to have a program like this to teach your children to read, Hooked on Phonics has a lot of value and can be a big help. If you approach it with the right attitude, your child can learn to read and learn to love reading.
