Play games to practice math

Submitted: February 18, 2003

Why spend time drilling math facts when you can have fun playing a game instead? No, I'm not talking about games designed to teach math, I'm talking about regular games. Many games involve some kind of math, even if they weren't designed as educational games.

Monopoly is a great game for practicing math. Not only do kids get lots of practice adding up two numbers between 1 and 6 (dice), they add up money, figure out change, multiply large numbers by two (double rent on a monopoly) and even do percentages (luxury tax). Scrabble is known as a word game, but there is also a lot of basic math involved in figuring out the scores in Scrabble, what with adding up the tiles and calculating double and triple letter and word scores.
