Faberge Eggs

Submitted: February 18, 2003

My son has had an interest in the Faberge Eggs for a couple of years now. This interest has led us in interesting directions, including art, Russian history, and the science of precious metal alloys.

The Faberge eggs were fabulous works of art created for Czar Alexander III and Czar Nicholas II as gifts for their wives on Easter. This beautiful tradition came to an end in 1917 when Nicholas was forced to abdicate and then later murdered along with his family, making the Faberge eggs a good springboard for a study of the Russian Revolution. The eggs themselves are an example of the excesses of the Romanovs, which could spark a discussion of the class differences which provoked the Russian Revolution.

Not only are the Faberge Eggs incredibly beautiful but many of them had surprises hidden inside, making them fascinating to children as well as adults. If you are lucky enough to live near a major metropolitan area, your local museum may even have a Faberge Egg or two in its collection that you could go and see. If not, keep your eyes open for traveling exhibitions that occur from time to time.
