Fantasy story to learn algebra

Submitted: November 13, 2005

The Journey of Al & Gebra to the Land of Algebra is a great introduction to algebra and pre-algebra concepts for visual and verbal learners, and for kids who have difficulties with the concepts. It tells the story of a young man named Al and a young woman named Gebra who go on a quest throughout the 14 kingdoms, to prove themselves worthy of the rank of Lord and Lady.

In each of the kingdoms, there is a problem that needs to be solved, and Al and Gebra use creativity, logic, and math to solve the problems. Each kingdom represents a different mathematical concept, such as negative numbers, exponents, variables, and reciprocals. The story is accompanied by numerous illustrations that help to make the concepts clear, and important points are pulled out and highlighted in boxes.

The book is great for learning concepts, but doesn't include any practice problems. Also, while concepts such as variables and solving equations are introduced, they are not taught in depth. Other sources will be needed for practice problems and deeper exploration. This is not intended as an algebra textbook alone, but rather to help kids understand the concepts so that they will have less difficulty understanding a textbook.
